The song is originally from the opera Ragnarök: Fate of the Gods by Helgi R. Ingvarsson. We get to know the Aces and see how their arrogance, lies and vanity lead to their deaths in the final battle, the Ragnarök. In this song, Óðinn sings and describes how he hears Múspell's army approaching.
The text comes mostly from the collection of poems "Ragnarökkur" by Benedikt Gröndal (published in 1868), but there are also fragments from Völuspá, Sigurdrífumál, Hamðismál and other sources. The work contains 16 musical numbers and is just over 1 hour long.
